Redmond Oregon's 6th Street Construction Project -- A Big Thank You!

HDG-REDMONDOREGON-Steve_PS_Shoes You get up, go to work and do your job, but how often are you thanked for what you do?  (Pictured is Steve at PS Shoes of Downtown Redmond enthusiastically watching over the construction and getting ready to shout out some thanks.)

Today, High Desert Gallery would like to use this blog to thank some folks who have been working hard to accomplish goals that might not seem so glamorous, but are vitally important to the Redmond community.

Thank you to all who have worked so hard on the Renovation Demonstration Project in Downtown Redmond. At times it has felt as if we'd slipped into the middle of a giant ant colony, with machines beeping, jack hammers attacking, and dust swirling as people ran to and fro. Our customers were often more fascinated with the men in big trucks than they were in what we were offering – but it was all good, and definitely worth it.

Thank You, City of Redmond, City Council, and past Mayor Alan Unger and current Mayor George Endicott, for your Long-term Planning and Visionary Goals. It wasn't easy, it wasn't without controversy, but it was with merit and has produced a positive outcome which will benefit both the economic climate and the quality of life for all of Redmond's citizens.

Thank you, TaylorNW, for you have done a truly spectacular job on all fronts. You agreed to a task that had to be completed within 60 days and are ahead of schedule. You worked tirelessly, kept open the channels of communication, went the extra mile to reduce construction obstacles to the businesses on 6th Street, and have amazed us with the attention to detail and the size of your workforce. Oh yeah, and the big backhoes and graders were pretty cool, too.

We would like to send a big Thank You to Heather Richards and the Community Development Team, and to the city for it's use of grant programs and urban renewal funds to minimize the financial impact to the downtown businesses. Already we see curious citizens eager to walk the new sidewalks and we all look forward to the groundbreaking of Centennial Park in the coming weeks.

Lastly, we would like to thank our customers and clients who were willing to find back entrances, brave the dust and gravel, park blocks away, carry on conversations over the jack hammer's staccato beat, and continue to support our Redmond Gallery, our Custom Framing Division and all of our Artists.

Yes, overall, you could say that the business owners are pretty excited, including Steve from PS Shoes, recently caught on camera showing his enthusiasm for the construction and eagerly awaiting its completion.

High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon Presents "Jump Off" - A New Original Painting by Kimry Jelen

KJ-JumpOff-96-550 Fans and collectors know it - equine artist Kimry Jelen has a special gift: she captures the heart, spirit, beauty and power of horses. In 2008, her painting “Sky Jump” represented the Central Oregon High Desert Classics, and was so successful that this year Kimry was again commissioned to create a painting, titled “Jump Off,” for the 20th anniversary of the event.

“2009 is the 20th anniversary of the Oregon High Desert Classics. The poster for last year was a big success so I was asked to do the artwork and design for this year's poster too! I wanted to include the two types of horses that compete caught mid-action. A "Jump Off" is a timed competition to see who can accurately jump a course the fastest. It is thrilling to watch! The bold energy, the size of the painting and color are representative of the action and excitement in jumping. The mountains are the backdrop for this event, it's amazing to see a horse leaping tall jumps with one of the Three Sisters behind it. Three horses made it into the painting, two braided "Hunters" and a "Jumper" - you can tell by the hair-dos.” - Kimry Jelen, 2009

Kimry also suggests, “If you want to know more about Hunters and Jumpers, check out this link!”

About the Art: “Jump Off” is a 36" x 48" one-of-a-kind original acrylic painting on canvas, professionally framed by award-winning custom framer Myrna Dow. High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is pleased and honored to make available artwork by Oregon artist, Kimry Jelen. For more information or to purchase "Jump Off" call the gallery at 866-549-6250 or visit: Kimry Jelen's Jump Off

Don't Wait for the Dust to Settle - Ground Breaking Ceremony for Centennial Park, Downtown Redmond scheduled June 23rd, 2009.

HDG-RedmondOregon-CentennialPark-96-550 High Desert Gallery has been witness to a remarkable transformation in downtown Redmond, Oregon starting with construction of the by-pass route, which eliminated heavy truck traffic, continued with the destruction and new resurrection of SW 6th Street, and now anticipates the completion in 2010 of Centennial Park – visible from our back door – with a design that includes open grassy areas, shade trees, a water feature for children, performance space, a pagoda with shade trellis and outdoor fireplace, space for a café vendor, public art, and ample space for outdoor markets and festivities.

So we - who consider ourselves to be forward thinking, seeing potential ahead of the curve – are pleased to pass along the City of Redmond's Press Release for the Ground Breaking Ceremony for Centennial Park, downtown Redmond.

The City of Redmond is hosting a ground breaking ceremony for the much anticipated Centennial Park in downtown Redmond Oregon.

The ceremony, scheduled for 8am on Tuesday, June 23rd, will take place at the Centennial Park site located on Evergreen Avenue between 7th and 8th Streets, directly across from City Hall (and a mere hop, skip and jump from High Desert Gallery in Redmond).

Redmond Mayor George Endicott will be joined by members of the Redmond City Council, City staff, construction contractors Kirby Nagelhout, and community stakeholders to welcome the start of a new city center park in downtown Redmond.

The City of Redmond has been working towards a new city center park since 1995, when it was identified as a priority project in the Downtown Urban Renewal Plan to help revitalize downtown Redmond and provide a gathering place for the community in the heart of Redmond.

“We have several downtown urban renewal projects that we are 'rolling out' this summer in Redmond, and are delighted that we are in a position where we can provide some significant work for Central Oregon contractors during this economic downturn. These projects have been in the planning stages for many years, and we are thankful that not only will they provide a long-term economic stimulus for downtown Redmond and the community of Redmond, but they are also providing much needed jobs for our community during a time of historic unemployment,” explained Heather Richards, Interim Community Development Director and Urban Renewal Project Manager.

All construction will be completed by May 2010 in time for Redmond's Centennial Celebration on July 6, 2010.

For more information contact Heather Richards, Interim Community Development Director at 923-7756.
