About Sue Favinger Smith: Sue Smith is a studio painter living in Central Oregon. Raised in California, she moved to Oregon in 1972. After a career in small business she returned to Oregon State University - Cascades, where she earned a degree in art and the Distinguished Student – Department of Art Award in 2005. She is represented in Central Oregon by High Desert Gallery.

“I’ve always been drawn to the idea that a good landscape painting is an invitation to explore. Where I live there is immense solitude, wild skies and secluded places. My work is about stepping in to this vast unknown and discovering what you might find there, of being alone without being lonely. My focus is to find a simple beauty in nature, without sentimentality.

My painting process is always evolving, as I seek better solutions to describe what I see. I paint directly, slowly allowing the forms to emerge from either the darkness or the light. I will use whatever tool gives me the surface quality I want, be that brush, or palette knife or rag. I believe the painting surface can communicate as much to the sense of light as the imagery – the overlaying of compliments, drawing back into wet paint, resolving the edges, thick and thin paint application. Everything you do affects what you’ve done and will do next. I am always learning, trying to capture with freshness and spontaneity this thing we call beauty.”

About Dan Tilden: All of Dan's work is turned on the lathe, using local woods from Southern Oregon. Typicall y he tu rns the wood in the green (when the wood is wet) and then manipulates th e dry ing process to creat e organic shapes and forms. What some people may think of as a flaw in wood, he uses this to build character in the work and let the wood speak for itself. Dan has enjoyed his fine craft as a wood turner for 9 years and continues his study with international known wood turners, Christian Burchard and David Ellsworth. Creating in wood is his passion and what he loves to do.

"Remember When..." - Guest Artist, Beverly Soasey Featured at High Desert Gallery in Bend, Oregon

"Remember When..."

High Desert Gallery is excited to announce guest artist, Beverly Soasey, February 18 to April 13, 2011. “Remember When..." exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery in downtown Bend, Oregon, located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford.

When trying to explain the meaning of Beverly’s art, it can be said that one is “painting their life”, that they and their art are one. Beverly’s ideas emerge from her reality; expressing her beliefs and ideals and exposing her truths. There are no boundaries, no rules on execution of materials. In a blending of objects and media, assemblage art invites exploration and experimentation. It is completely suited to her collective nature, where she can do whatever it takes to express an idea, evoke a mood or convey a concept. Beverly’s work is a study of textures, patterns and color, the combination of elements that intrigue and surprise the viewer. This process begins with the search and ends in a story. “I love going to that unknown place and surprising myself with the result. There’s always that moment when I know a piece is finished, but until that moment, I have no clue when it will happen.” Her studio is a collection of hundreds of objects, photos, books, bird wings, metal and ideas saved in various forms. There are boxes full of secrets and boxes waiting to be filled. Assemblage art requires having inspiration and ideas around all of the time to translate her thoughts and ideas into a single statement. Beverly’s passion for collecting, traveling and exploring in shown throughout her art.

Gabriel Kulka - “Walk with Me" Opens at High Desert Gallery - Bend Oregon

High Desert Gallery is excited to announce guest artist, Gabriel Kulka to our gallery and his first time showing in Oregon. “Walk with Me" Opens at High Desert Gallery and showing through February 16 , 2011.

“I like the idea of human forms sculpted by humans” he says, ” As people, we place value and identity into the objects and the space around us and create memories in our surroundings. We explore the world and ourselves through our senses touching, smelling, hearing and seeing creating a blurry line between objects, space and self. I am fascinated by this reciprocal relationship. I see it as a constructive symbiosis with the world we live in and through my work, I try to investigate and emphasize this experience.” - Gabriel Kulka

Teeny Tiny Art Show at High Desert Gallery

High Desert Gallery's annual Teeny Tiny Art Show continues through December. The yearly show and sale has become one of most anticipated events for our artists, collectors and gallery patrons. We have over 20 participating artists this year and each artist has created from 1-3, two and three dimensional works of art. Most originals are 5"x7" or 4"x6" unframed and then custom framed by High Desert Frameworks! Cross Culture Bike + Art Love, Art Walk Listing For Friday, December 10, 2010 - Bend Oregon

In a previous post we made note of one special part of the 2010 USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships that we wanted to bring to your attention and that is the Cross Culture: Bike + Art Love (Press Release).

We hope you can join us on Friday, December 10, 2010 for the Bike + Art Walk in Downtown and the Old Mill District of Bend Oregon.

What's all the talk?

Cross Culture: Bike + Art Love encompasses a multi-event arts celebration scheduled during Cyclo-cross nationals. There are a number of ways to join the Bend community in expressing our love of the bicycle. A Friday night community art walk, ARTCRANK and storytelling events are just a few of the offerings lined up to complete your Cyclo-cross Nationals agenda of fun.

Arts events will kick-off on Thursday, December 9^th at Portello Wine Bar in NorthWest Crossing with the Spoke-N-Word storytelling event at 8:30pm.

Bike enthusiasts, builders and artists will partner with local businesses in planning an all-out evening of creative hurrah on Friday, December 10th. The community art walk (5-9PM) will feature ARTCRANK a nationally recognized but locally produced poster art exhibit and party for bike people.

First Friday Art Gallery Walk - Bend Oregon - Teeny Tiny Art Show at High Desert Gallery

Mix a three and two dimensional mindset, give a challenge to size and imagination, and what do you get? A Teeny Tiny Art Show!

Celebrate with us as we host our annual miniature exhibition of Fine Art and Craft, featuring work by more than 18 outstanding Oregon artists. The Teeny Tiny Art Show, exhibiting the intricacy and delight of small format art, runs from December 2, 2010 through January 4, 2011 at High Desert Gallery's downtown Bend Oregon art gallery located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford, and will feature a Holiday Open House and Artist Reception.

First Friday Gallery Walk and Artist Reception: Friday, December 3, from 5 to 9pm. Meet the artists, refreshments, and live music by Erin Cole-Baker, from 5:30 to 8:30pm during First Friday Gallery Walk. A hoot for sure.

Valerie Winterholler

Juxtaposition #1

"My artwork is usually an exploration of some kind. It can be of materials, techniques, or images. Working with maps and all their underlying meanings has always fascinated me. I like the idea that they can be a pathway to a new adventure, or a window into a part of the world that I know nothing about. There is a feeling of anticipation in maps, and what they may lead me to. Using them as a back ground to the paintings, gives them an aura of mystery, how are they connected to the images in the forefront of the piece? Is there some hidden message that can barely be seen if one looks closely? The exploration will continue, I’m not sure where they will end up, but I am enjoying the journey."

Juxtaposition #2

"The world is a big place. Sometimes cutting it down into smaller pieces and painting a pretty picture over the top can help a person feel a little more in control of what is going on. I like maps. I like pictures of places I’ve never been. I imagine the people who live there and wonder if they have ever looked at a map of where I live and spend my day and wondered about me. Using the images of maps in my artwork is a way to bring the world and its wide-open spaces down into a smaller, more manageable size. One tiny piece at a time."

Lisa Kaser

Celestine Contemplates

"This little piece is created out of oak gauls, found materials, beach stones, shells and beeswax. The base is a Japanese mold for rice. Celestine was inspired by characters from my childhood who had a contemplative side to their nature like, Pogo, Pooh, Tom Sawyer and Little Bear. I love capturing a character in quiet thought."

Alternative Passage

"This little piece is created out of salvaged cloth, street sweeper bristles, found materials, beach stones, shells and beeswax. The base is a Japanese mold for rice. The idea of passage and the means by which we make our passage in life is so fun to describe creatively. My passage is as broad as my imagination."

Morgan Madison

"The parameters of this exhibit were challenging. I found myself pulled in different directions as I searched for a way to share my voice effectively under the guidelines. Working on such a small scale magnifies every decision that is made during the creative process. This weighed heavily as I approached the challenge with careful deliberation. I filled numerous pages of my sketchbook exploring new ideas and searching for an artistic breakthrough. I planned test firings and experiments as I contemplated new techniques and sought to push my technical limits. However, I met each new idea with growing skepticism, looking for their flaws and weaknesses, all the while hoping that, somehow, I was getting closer to distilling my identity as an artist down into a 4” x 6” rectangle. I felt like using a lot of color and making some work that was graphic and lively. So I did, and I like how it turned out. I couldn’t tell you exactly what inspired these pieces but I think that means I got where I was going all along, in spite of my best efforts."

Teeny Tiny Art Show Opens Tonight with Holiday Open House - Thursday December 2, 2010 Bend Oregon

Our Annual Fine Art and Craft exhibition, the Teeny Tiny Art Show, opens tonight at 5pm and runs through January 4, 2011 at High Desert Gallery's downtown Bend Oregon art gallery located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford. Image: "Spam" Oil on canvas board by Donald Yatomi.
