Wish Upon A Card - Fabric Post Card Event opens -- 2009 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show

The 2009 Wish Upon A Card, a silent auction and sale of donated fabric postcards, is now open for your bidding pleasure!. Nearly 80 custom framed fabric post cards have been donated to raise funds for the Wendy's Wish project. Approximately 55 custom framed fabric post cards are hanging at Sisters Artworks and available for your silent bid! Another 25 custom framed fabric post cards will be displayed during the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show's Quilters Affair Week. The fabric post cards that are displayed at Quilters Affair venue have been created by the quilt instructors. Over $17,000 raised from the project in the past two years has been donated to Wendy's Wish Foundation.

The 2009 Wish Upon A Card fundraiser is a juried silent auction. High Desert Gallery has provided a 100% donation (materials and labor) of custom framing for 80 postcards. The postcards not selected for the silent auction will be sold at other venues by the Wendy’s Wish volunteers. The silent auction officially begins July 5, during the Around the Block Fiber Arts Stroll and will continue through Quilt Show Day, July 11, 2009 and on display at Sisters Art Works. A special juried group of 30 cards from our Quilters Affair Instructors are framed and silent auctioned at the Sisters Oregon high School during the week of classes, July 6 – 10. The silent auction of the instructors fabric post cards ENDS Friday, July 10 at 11am! The silent auction of the fabric post cards at Sisters Artworks ends Quilt Show Day, Saturday, July 11^th.

Wendy’s Wish is a project to support the St. Charles Cancer Treatment Center. Wendy’s Wish exists to provide education, promote early detection of cancer and offer affordable, compassionate emotional support to each individual’s personal journey. Wendy’s Wish is named in honor of Wendy S. Huntley, a Central Oregon quilter who had breast cancer and ultimately passed away from colon cancer in the summer of 2006. High Desert Frameworks! in Downtown Bend, Oregon will participate in a special event this Friday, July 3, called "Oregon by the Dozen."  The gallery will feature work by Cristina Acosta and Paul Alan Bennett for a silent auction event benefiting Arts Central Educational & Resource Center.

The Bend Gallery Association's “Oregon by the Dozen” fundraiser for Arts Central kicks off during the July 3, 2009 First Friday Gallery Walk, with month-long bidding, followed by the group exhibit and auction finale on August 7 at the Arts Central Educational & Resource Center, located in the historic Goodwillie-Allen-Rademacher House (formerly Mirror Pond Gallery) in downtown Bend.

In conjunction with the Oregon 150 – a year-long celebration of our state's 150 birthday – communities host events that honor the people, places and organizations that have been – and continue to be - sources of inspiration and discovery. For 15 years, Arts Central operated Mirror Pond Gallery before closing its doors. Redmond Oregon hosts the 6th Street Ribbon Cutting Party Friday July 3

You're Invited to Redmond Oregon's 6th Street Ribbon Cutting Party, Friday, July 3rd from 5-8 pm, at the intersection of 6th Street and Evergreen Avenue in Downtown Redmond.

Please come help us celebrate the completion of The 6th Street Revitalization Project between Deschutes and Forest Avenues, and support our downtown merchants who are working hard to make their friends and customers feel welcome.

The evening will include a ribbon cutting for the new section of 6th Street, a Town Portrait from above the street by professional photographer Timothy Park, live music by the River Pigs, local food and drink, and bouncy houses for the kids!

Plus, a $2,000 giveaway in Redmond Downtown Dollars! 20 people will win $100 in Redmond Downtown Dollars, with the first 400 people to arrive receiving a raffle ticket - plan to come early so you don't miss out.

The excitement begins July 3, at 5pm, right outside our Redmond Gallery's front door. High Desert Frameworks! in Downtown Bend, Oregon will feature work by Cristina Acosta and Paul Alan Bennett during the month long silent auction event benefiting Arts Central Educational & Resource Center.

The Bend Gallery Association's “Oregon by the Dozen” fundraiser for Arts Central kicks off during the July 3, 2009 First Friday Gallery Walk with a silent auction in each of the twelve participating galleries, including High Desert Frameworks! Bidding continues through July, followed by the group exhibit and auction finale on August 7 at the Arts Central Educational & Resource Center, located in the historic Goodwillie-Allen-Rademacher House (formerly Mirror Pond Gallery) in downtown Bend.

High Desert Frameworks! will feature new work by Cristina Acosta and Paul Alan Bennett. Cristina's painting, titled “Autumn Geese,” combines color and and her signature fluid line to capture the energy and beauty of Canadian Geese as they land in early evening. Paul Alan Bennett will debut another image from his highly successful “Imaginary Landscapes” series, inspired by the mountains, rivers and night skies of High Desert Country.

The twelve Bend Gallery Association members who are participating in the silent auction include Art Impressions, Atelier 6000, BICA, Glass Symphony, High Desert Frameworks!, Karen Bandy Studio, Lubbesmeyer Fiber Studio & Gallery, Mockingbird Gallery, Sage Custom Framing & Gallery, and Tumalo Art Co. July Artist Reception for Paul Alan Bennett at High Desert Gallery – Redmond Oregon

You're invited to a special artist event Friday July 17th, from 5 – 8pm.

High Desert Gallery is honored to present “Imaginary Landscapes,” a new series of original paintings and fine art giclees by Oregon artist Paul Alan Bennett. Drawn from imagined – and yet familiar – landscapes throughout the High Desert, Paul Alan Bennett works with his iconic style to transport the viewer to magical places.

“The rivers hint of such places as the Columbia River, the Snake and The John Day. The mountains suggest the Cascade Range, The Steens or those found in the high plateau areas of Southern Oregon or Nevada. The brilliance of the stars in the high desert sky are common to all these areas. They are like tiny mirrors sewn into the fabric of the night.

The central theme of all these works is made up of three parts: night sky, mountains and rivers. These act like three chords of music. The placement of boats, birds, trees, rocks, the moon and stars are the accent notes within those chord patterns. The eye is guided around by such accents. This serves to create a silent symphony of wonder and scale, similar to that found in the Romantic images of early American landscape painting.” -- Paul Alan Bennett, June 2009

I love watching horses, naked of any tack, running across a large expanse of land. They are un-tethered and moving their bodies without the constraints of human direction. Watching them, a little of myself runs with them. I lived with horses on an old homestead when I first moved to Central Oregon in the 1980's. Often alone for weeks at a time, the horses were part of the family of animals on the ranch. They became my friends and companions. Observing them taught me to remember to embrace joyful abandon in the small moments of my life. -- Cristina Acosta, May 2009

“Daily Chores”

This painting was inspired from some family photos of my cousin Joe's wife Patty.

As I was going through these old photos I really liked the one of Patty's dad, Floyd Dewayne Stuck, he was 16 at the time in 1949. Floyd was a logger: their family moved here from Oklahoma in 1940. Lived in a tent in Hillsboro Oregon for a year and then bought property in Gales Creek, Oregon.

The Stucks built a barn in 41 soon after the original house burnt down in the huge Tillamook burn fire, times were rough, the barn made it through the fire along with the chicken coup, so they remodeled the chicken coup to live in. They started a small strawberry farm and built a small logging mill on the property, the barn just fell down this last winter. Until just a few years ago there was still an outhouse on the property.

The painting is an accumulation of the two photos, the edge of the barn in the foreground is also the same barn in the background with the cow standing in front of it. Floyd would gt up early to feed and milk the cows then harness the workhorses up with the skid and take them out to do the logging.

There was an old car on the road in the back of the barn, I own a 37 Ford panel delivery, so I made the car into my old delivery, and you know that's what artist's license is all about. -- Jerry Werner, May 2009

Just Practicing. Rodeo bulls are big, so big, that this one barely fit on the painting surface! It seems like they shouldn't be able to get their feet as high off the ground as they do. These one ton animals manage to leap, dive, spin and twist in a way that just doesn't seem possible. Bull riding must be quite the "rush" in so many ways! I think when we aren't watching...they work out maneuvers on their own time - just to keep tuned up and ready to rumble...like this guy, he's "just Practicing"! -- Kimry Jelen May 2009

“High Valley”

I grew up listening to the stories: there was John Chapman - Johnny Appleseed - an ancestor of mine, and my grandparents, who lived in a sod-roofed house in Iowa. There was the story about a great grandmother from another branch of the family, who was kidnapped by the Sioux as a 5 year old child. I sat in awe, listening to the details of how her father and brothers had to track the raiding party, then ransom her back for two mules and a rifle.

There is a part of me that has always yearned for the empty, unexplored spaces - "West of West." Badlands and High Valley are from my Mesa Series - paintings that seek to capture an elusive isolation in the High Desert. I've walked along these trails in my mind and in my life, stood on high vantage points and stared out at the endless vista. I've relished the isolation, wondered what was just around that bend, found peace in the hawk's call while watching clouds crowd out the horizon.

    Ranches of all shapes and sizes once dotted the western United States.  Some ranches have thrived and become modernized testimonials to the new western way of life.  Still more have vanished or been assimilated into housing developments, highways or new golf resorts.  One such ranch was offered to me as a hunting ground for rusty metal parts and treasured pieces.  The bits of old steel are full of untold stories, songs by the campfire and endless starry nights in the desert of Central Oregon.  i am inspired by the life contained in each one.  These one of a kind found objects impart their individual story to each of the pieces created from them and if you listen very carefully, maybe you will even hear the song from long ago.  -- Trisha Hassler, May 2009

About Trisha Hassler:  Lifetime quilter and award winning Oregon Artist, Trisha has enjoyed numerous group and one woman exhibits throughout the United States and New Zealand.  Her work has been published nationally in books and magazines highlighting contemporary fiber work.  As a current board member of Art In The Pearl Fine Arts & Crafts Festival and former board member of L.O.C.A.L. 14 she is very involved in the local arts community in her home town of Portland.  Trisha embraces both torch-cut steel and improvisational quilt construction and through her artistic abilities combines the two mediums into one art form even though the two parts are considered at opposite ends of the artistic spectrum.  Her work is known for it's intricacy and surface detail and the use of the dissimilar elements has become her trademark.  Trisha Hassler's artwork is available exclusively in Central Oregon at High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon.
