First Friday Art Gallery Walk - Bend Oregon - Teeny Tiny Art Show at High Desert Gallery

Mix a three and two dimensional mindset, give a challenge to size and imagination, and what do you get? A Teeny Tiny Art Show!

Celebrate with us as we host our annual miniature exhibition of Fine Art and Craft, featuring work by more than 18 outstanding Oregon artists. The Teeny Tiny Art Show, exhibiting the intricacy and delight of small format art, runs from December 2, 2010 through January 4, 2011 at High Desert Gallery's downtown Bend Oregon art gallery located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford, and will feature a Holiday Open House and Artist Reception.

First Friday Gallery Walk and Artist Reception: Friday, December 3, from 5 to 9pm. Meet the artists, refreshments, and live music by Erin Cole-Baker, from 5:30 to 8:30pm during First Friday Gallery Walk. A hoot for sure.

Juxtaposition #1

"My artwork is usually an exploration of some kind. It can be of materials, techniques, or images. Working with maps and all their underlying meanings has always fascinated me. I like the idea that they can be a pathway to a new adventure, or a window into a part of the world that I know nothing about. There is a feeling of anticipation in maps, and what they may lead me to. Using them as a back ground to the paintings, gives them an aura of mystery, how are they connected to the images in the forefront of the piece? Is there some hidden message that can barely be seen if one looks closely? The exploration will continue, I’m not sure where they will end up, but I am enjoying the journey."

"The world is a big place. Sometimes cutting it down into smaller pieces and painting a pretty picture over the top can help a person feel a little more in control of what is going on. I like maps. I like pictures of places I’ve never been. I imagine the people who live there and wonder if they have ever looked at a map of where I live and spend my day and wondered about me. Using the images of maps in my artwork is a way to bring the world and its wide-open spaces down into a smaller, more manageable size. One tiny piece at a time."

Celestine Contemplates

"This little piece is created out of oak gauls, found materials, beach stones, shells and beeswax. The base is a Japanese mold for rice. Celestine was inspired by characters from my childhood who had a contemplative side to their nature like, Pogo, Pooh, Tom Sawyer and Little Bear. I love capturing a character in quiet thought."

Alternative Passage

"This little piece is created out of salvaged cloth, street sweeper bristles, found materials, beach stones, shells and beeswax. The base is a Japanese mold for rice. The idea of passage and the means by which we make our passage in life is so fun to describe creatively. My passage is as broad as my imagination."

Morgan Madison

"The parameters of this exhibit were challenging. I found myself pulled in different directions as I searched for a way to share my voice effectively under the guidelines. Working on such a small scale magnifies every decision that is made during the creative process. This weighed heavily as I approached the challenge with careful deliberation. I filled numerous pages of my sketchbook exploring new ideas and searching for an artistic breakthrough. I planned test firings and experiments as I contemplated new techniques and sought to push my technical limits. However, I met each new idea with growing skepticism, looking for their flaws and weaknesses, all the while hoping that, somehow, I was getting closer to distilling my identity as an artist down into a 4” x 6” rectangle. I felt like using a lot of color and making some work that was graphic and lively. So I did, and I like how it turned out. I couldn’t tell you exactly what inspired these pieces but I think that means I got where I was going all along, in spite of my best efforts."

Teeny Tiny Art Show: The Anticipation is HUGE for High Desert Gallery's annual show

High Desert Gallery's annual Teeny Tiny Art Show is just around the corner. The yearly show and sale has become one of most anticipated events for our artists, collectors and gallery patrons. We have over 20 participating artists this year and each artist has created from 1-3, two and three dimensional works of art. Most originals are 5"x7" or 4"x6" unframed and then custom framed by High Desert Frameworks! Great works of art that you will treasure for many many years or think about presenting them to a love one for a special holiday gift.

Exhibition: “Of Mind and Spirit” – Cary Weigand and Morgan Madison – July in Bend, Oregon

High Desert Gallery is pleased to announce the July exhibition, "Of Mind and Spirit", in our Bend, Oregon, gallery location at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford. This exhibit and sale will feature new ceramic sculpture by Cary Weigand and original fused glass by Morgan Madison, and will run from July 1 through July 25, with a Preview Artist Reception July 1, from 5 to 8, and a First Friday Artist Reception on July 2, from 5 to 9pm.

For nationally known artist, Cary Weigand, ceramics is a very humanistic and tactile experience. Drawn to Asian philosophies and Shamanism she finds they both focus on awareness of mind, spirit, and environment and her work is an expression of the subconscious and symbolism.

Acclaimed Oregon kiln-formed glass artist Morgan Madison's creations are inspired by sources as divergent as urban design and the Northwest landscape and are truly spectacular.

Special Preview Artist Reception for Cary Weigand and Morgan Madison:

Thursday July 1 , from 5 to 8pm. This event has become a favorite with collectors who enjoy more personal time with the artists and a chance to talk in depth about the art.

About Cary L Weigand: Born and raised sixth generation in Hawaii, Cary graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Masters of Fine Art in Ceramics and relocated to Central Oregon in 2004. Her major interest in figure modeling expands both the use of ceramic techniques as well as explores some relatively neglected areas in content. Her figures evoke a sense of mass in contrast to the loose and flowing slab work of drapery and body appendages. This formal device provides an important ground for the content of her work, aimed at a search for a contemporary spirituality. Working with porcelain, a figurine is worked upward slowly allowing each layer to dry. Then, it is painted with oxides and glazed before firing. For nationally known artist, Cary Weigand, ceramics is a very humanistic and tactile experience. Drawn to Asian philosophies and Shamanism she finds they both focus on awareness of mind, spirit, and environment. The figure represents a vehicle of humanity. Cary's work is an expression of the subconscious and symbolism. She states: ""In this way, I seek to look deeper within myself. I look upon each piece as that something which beckons the impenetrable shadows of madness, or the liquid flow of existence, day after day after day, (Or maybe this heart...) a wild beast caged within its chest, dreaming a dream which we've already seen unfolding before us, (time and time again.) Cary's original artwork including her fine art porcelain sculpture is available exclusively in Central Oregon at High Desert Gallery in Bend Oregon.

About Morgan Madison: As an artist, Morgan Madison quickly found his niche in drawing and sculpture, but a chance encounter with the process of kiln formed glass opened the door to experimentation. Drawing on his background in fine arts, Morgan developed his ideas technically and conceptually, earning the respect of the Pacific Northwest glass community and gaining national recognition. Morgan Madison's work reveals an eye for the unique and a creative curiosity that has evolved into compelling and beautifully ethereal glass art that ranges from functional pieces to mixed media sculptures and wall panels. His work is exhibited throughout the Americas and is in numerous private collections and public spaces. 2010 Art Gallery Events – High Desert Gallery, Bend Oregon

High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon is pleased to release their 2010 Art Gallery Events. The fine art gallery is located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue, on the retail floor of the Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend Oregon. Each month during the Bend Oregon First Friday Art Gallery Walk the gallery will host an artist reception with live music, new work by select regionally and nationally known Central Oregon Artists, refreshments and a darn good time!

Starting in April, special Artist Preview Receptions will be held on the Thursday prior to First Friday and provide a wonderful opportunity for gallery clients, guests and the public to chat with the artist and view and purchase the newest work available from the artists.
