About Sue Favinger Smith:  Sue Smith is a studio painter living in Central Oregon. Raised in California, she moved to Oregon in 1972. After a career in small business she returned to Oregon State University - Cascades, where she earned a degree in art and the Distinguished Student – Department of Art Award in 2005. She is represented in Central Oregon by High Desert Gallery.

“I’ve always been drawn to the idea that a good landscape painting is an invitation to explore. Where I live there is immense solitude, wild skies and secluded places. My work is about stepping in to this vast unknown and discovering what you might find there, of being alone without being lonely. My focus is to find a simple beauty in nature, without sentimentality. 

My painting process is always evolving, as I seek better solutions to describe what I see. I paint directly, slowly allowing the forms to emerge from either the darkness or the light. I will use  whatever tool gives me the surface quality I want, be that brush, or palette knife or rag. I believe the painting surface can communicate as much to the sense of light as the imagery – the overlaying of compliments, drawing back into wet paint, resolving the edges, thick and thin paint application. Everything you do affects what you’ve done and will do next. I am always learning, trying to capture with freshness and spontaneity this thing we call beauty.”

About Dan Tilden:  All of Dan's work is turned on the lathe, using local woods from Southern Oregon. Typicall y he tu rns the wood in the green (when the wood is wet) and then manipulates th e dry ing process to creat e organic shapes and forms. What some people may think of as a flaw in wood, he uses this to build character in the work and let the wood speak for itself.  Dan has enjoyed his fine craft as a wood turner for 9 years and continues his study with international known wood turners, Christian Burchard and David Ellsworth. Creating in wood is his passion and what he loves to do.

Teeny Tiny Art Show: The Anticipation is HUGE for High Desert Gallery's annual show

High Desert Gallery's annual Teeny Tiny Art Show is just around the corner.  The yearly show and sale has become one of most anticipated events for our artists, collectors and gallery patrons.  We have over 20 participating artists this year and each artist has created from 1-3, two and three dimensional works of art.  Most originals are 5"x7" or 4"x6" unframed and then custom framed by High Desert Frameworks!  Great works of art that you will treasure for many many years or think about presenting them to a love one for a special holiday gift.

     

Here's the details:  Celebrate with us as we host our annual miniature exhibition of Fine Art and Craft, featuring work by more than 20 outstanding Oregon artists.   The Teeny Tiny Art Show and exhibition, promoting the intricacy and delight of small format art, runs from December 2, 2010 through January 4, 2011 at High Desert Gallery's downtown Bend Oregon art gallery located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford, and will feature a Holiday Open House and Artist Reception.

Oregon State of Mind -- Oil Painters of America Western Regional Show

The Oil Painters of America Western Regional Juried Show was expected to draw a large crowd to the opening, held October 9 in Jackson, Wyoming, to see some of the finest in representational artwork by 112 Signature and Associate painters as well as 10 to 12 Master Signature Members. 

Oregon artist Sue Favinger Smith was included among the distinguished artists juried in to this year's exhibition, and we wanted to share some of her thoughts about this opportunity and her painting, Grasslands in Winter.

HDG: Can you tell us more about this show?

Sue Smith: The Oil Painters of America has been the driving force behind a resurgence in representational painting and it attracts artists of the highest caliber.  The Western Regional Juried Show accepts entries from Canada, the western half of the United States, and Mexico.  This is the first time I've exhibited in this show, and it was quite an honor.  One of the perks of acceptance was the opportunity to be included in the American Art Collector November issue. That was a huge thrill to see my work in print.

HDG:  How did you find the inspiration for your entry, Grasslands in Winter?

Sue Smith: Part inspiration - and a big part by accident. The painting is an odd format, 12 inches by 28 inches.  I had ordered some canvases online and somehow received this size instead of the one I'd ordered.  I thought - what can I possibly do with this - and put it away thinking I would never use it.  Then this past spring we went on a painting expedition to the area of Eastern Oregon between Madras and Maupin, then on up toward the gorge.  It was a miserable stormy day - the kind that I actually love.  I yelled "stop the car" in the middle of nowhere and got out and started sketching and taking pictures like mad.  It was raining, the wind was blowing, and I think my husband actually thought I was mad.  But the resulting inspiration fit perfectly with the size of that canvas.  I wanted to capture the vastness of the landscape, the isolation, the storm coming in, and the depth of space, from the close up grasses to the distant clouds and power poles.

HDG: So what exactly is painting expedition?

Sue Smith: That's where I ask my husband to drive until I yell stop.  Then I get out and start wandering around.  When he asks me what I'm doing, I say "looking for the painting." 

HDG: Does Grasslands in Winter mark a new direction in your work?

Sue Smith: More of an expansion on themes I've been exploring over the past year. My influences are drawn from the American Impressionists, so I focus on capturing the atmosphere of a fugitive moment. Nature doesn't stand still and some of the best ideas present themselves for a matter of seconds.  Trying to capture a memory keeps me quick on my feet - and open to pushing my approach.  Sometimes a painting needs a quieter feel to capture the sense of serenity.  Other paintings are very active and exciting.

HDG: This might seem like the obvious question, but why do you paint?

Sue Smith: I'm addicted.  I paint for the sheer joy of painting.

After graduating with the Distinguished Student – Department of Art Award, Smith set out to explore the idea of landscape, pushing traditional approaches with contemporary ideas.  A brief study in Italy convinced the artist of the value in getting out and studying nature.  To find subjects to paint, Smith returned to the high desert, where the fugitive qualities of the light, the isolation and changing weather has traditionally inspired artists such as American Impressionist Childe Hassam.  “The landscape invites me to explore – where does this road lead, what does that storm feel like, who lived here hundreds or thousands of years ago - in a way these ghosts of landscapes past are my best friends – my muse.”

Sue Favinger Smith is a juried member of the National Association of Women Artists, an associate member of Women Artists of the West, and an associate Member of Oil Painters of America. She is represented by High Desert Gallery in Bend, Oregon.

Sue Favinger Smith Accepted into Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition

High Desert Gallery and Central Oregon's own, Sue Favinger Smith’s oil painting, Grasslands in Winter, has been accepted into the Oil Painters of America’s Western Regional Exhibition.  Included paintings were selected from hundreds of entries and represent some of the finest work being produced in the western half of the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The OPA Western Regional Exhibition will be held at Mountain Trails Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming, from October 6 through November 20, 2010.

“I work hard at learning what I need to know,” Sue Smith explains. Her process usually begins with repeated visits to the locations that interest her visually, looking for the details that best capture moments of transition. “Grasslands in Winter depicts one of my favorite elements in the high desert – storms that sweep across the grasslands in early Spring and then again in the Fall, clearing the air and marking the changing seasons. Feeling the force of the cold wind, the bite of the rain, seeing the quality of the light dip and change – it’s a very powerful experience.” The painting was inspired by several visits to an area east of Maupin, in Central Oregon, where the only sign of human habitation is the paved road and the telephone poles. “One could almost imagine being in another century if it weren’t for those poles.”

Painted with a Tonalist palette but an Impressionist sensibility, Smith combined impasto palette knife work with smoother brush strokes to create a visual sense of what she wanted to communicate – a sense of immediacy in the imagery. “It’s when the ordinary-ness of life transforms into that instant of pure awareness of what it feels like to be alive.”

Rimrock Springs: I like to paint places of solitude. Rimrock Springs is located between Madras and Prineville, in the Crooked River National Grasslands. Historically, this was once a homestead for an early Prineville pioneer, but it has since been turned into a national wildlife preserve. The springs create a marsh and feed Willow Creek, and the area supports numerous species of songbirds, waterfowl, aquatic mammals, raptors, deer, antelope and coyote. One winter day as we walked the path we came across animal tracks that were large enough to be a mountain lion, and we decided to cut short our hike and get back to the car and save the exploring for another day.  Oil on linen on panel 12" x 16"

Along the Deschutes: This painting is very much in the tradition of the  Impressionists, with the emphasis on capturing the movement of light through the willows along the riverbank. "Along the Deschutes" celebrates the quiet mood of the river as it flows through Cline Falls State Park.  Oil on canvas on panel 8" x 16"

Linden Trees and Water: Some of my work is heavily influenced by the Hudson River School painters, their concepts about man (or woman) as the explorer, and the sublime effect of light on hidden landscapes. I came across this scene one hot afternoon when I was hiking with my dogs at Smith Rock State Park. We were exploring a back trail, and the dogs - always ready for a cool drink and a nap - found this spot before I did. After the heat of the day, finding this little stream flowing down toward the river below was a perfect respite.  Oil on canvas on panel 20" x 16"

“While I love to paint water, the real essence of this painting is the relationship of the light as it first defines the transparent water rushing over the rocks, and then the warmth radiating upward beneath the spiky shrubs along the rocky bank. There is both action and stillness, moisture and aridity. The poetry in these contrasts add to the richness of being alive in this place.”

“The idea that interests me in this painting is that of unexplored territory, not just following a path but forging your own. I find myself increasingly drawn to the idea of emptiness, of what it was like in this place centuries ago, when there were no highways or towns or fence lines to get in the way between man and the horizon. High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon is pleased to introduce two new Oregon landscapes by Sue Smith, from her Paintings From The Oregon Outback Series.

Spring Aspens, 18 x 24, oil on canvas. "Where I live in Oregon I'm 20 minutes away from wilderness - snow capped mountains, alpine meadows, streams and aspen groves. I love this environment, the idea that you can find a place that still feels empty and pristine. Spring Aspens is such a place."

Stone Fence, 16 x 20, oil on linen on board. "Several years ago I discovered this fence and an old blue house behind it. There was a beautiful azure blue gate between stone pillars which had initially attracted my attention. But time passed. I forgot about this spot. Then recently, I returned to the site and was dismayed to discover that the house had burned down and the gate had disappeared. Still, there was a sense of what had been, and I wanted to capture that resilient dignity on this gray winter day."

About Sue Favinger Smith: Sue Smith began her award-winning career at the age of 50, earning an art degree from Oregon State University in 2005. Since then she has focused on oil painting, exploring the techniques and color used by painters who inspire her. Sue has participated in national and regional exhibitions, solo and three-person shows, and is a member of Women Artists of the West, Oil Painters of America, and the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, the oldest professional arts organization for women in the country. Her work is in private collections across the country.
