First Friday Artist Reception: I Heart Oregon at HIgh Desert Gallery - Bend Oregon

What do you love about Oregon? Clear skies? Starry nights? Snow capped mountains? The ocean breeze or maybe the fragrant wildflowers of the high desert. We love Oregon and want you to help us celebrate. After all -- February is for lovers and happens to be the birth month of Oregon! Teeny Tiny Art Show: The Anticipation is HUGE for High Desert Gallery's annual show

High Desert Gallery's annual Teeny Tiny Art Show is just around the corner. The yearly show and sale has become one of most anticipated events for our artists, collectors and gallery patrons. We have over 20 participating artists this year and each artist has created from 1-3, two and three dimensional works of art. Most originals are 5"x7" or 4"x6" unframed and then custom framed by High Desert Frameworks! Great works of art that you will treasure for many many years or think about presenting them to a love one for a special holiday gift.

Here's the details: Celebrate with us as we host our annual miniature exhibition of Fine Art and Craft, featuring work by more than 20 outstanding Oregon artists. The Teeny Tiny Art Show and exhibition, promoting the intricacy and delight of small format art, runs from December 2, 2010 through January 4, 2011 at High Desert Gallery's downtown Bend Oregon art gallery located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford, and will feature a Holiday Open House and Artist Reception.

Holiday Open House: Thursday December 2, from 5 to 8pm. Enjoy light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments and be the first to see new work!

First Friday Gallery Walk and Artist Reception: Friday, December 3, from 5 to 9pm. Meet the artists, refreshments, and live music by Erin Cole-Baker, from 5:30 to 8:30pm during First Friday Gallery Walk. A hoot for sure.

6XA6.COM – Annual Fine Art Print Show - Just Around The Corner!

6XA6 (6 by A6) kicks off on Thursday, September 2nd! We hope you can join us! This year six High Desert Gallery Artists have worked at Atelier 6000 (A6) to produce a selection of original hand pulled fine art block prints, etchings, and monoprints. Selected artists include: Grace Bishko, Glen Corbett, Paul Alan Bennett, Patricia Freeman-Martin, Kimry Jelen and Ingrid Lustig. Additionally we have two very special artists and printmakers showing at 6XA6 -- John Simpkins and Cristina Acosta, who are supporters of A6 and have a great selection of fine art prints. The show and receptions should be a hoot and we hope you can attend. As a reminder: Our two artist receptions are on Thursday September 2, 2010 from 5-8pm and Friday September 3 from 5-9pm. Grace Bishko – Two Artist Receptions This Week in Bend Oregon - Live Music with Erin Cole-Baker and Bellavia

“I will be playing music for the rest of my life” is the tag line on Erin Cole-Baker's website, and one we applaud. This singer-songwriter grew up in New Zealand, in a home filled with acoustic music, jazz, blues, even classical piano. As she grew older, she began to realize how the music was influencing her life. Erin now says that music is “her love and her passion, and she hopes to share it with you.”

After moving to the States in 2005, Erin joined with Erin Zurflu, to form a singing duo familiar to Sisters Folk Festival enthusiasts and fans everywhere as The Erins. Compelling songwriting and thoughtful lyrics have pleased audiences across the country.

High Desert Gallery is honored to host Erin Cole-Baker during the opening artist reception for Grace Bishko.

Bellavia is a Central Oregon band featuring great music from many different genres, including jazz, blues and pop classics as well as some original material. Enjoy the smooth styling of multi-instrumentalist, Kimberly Lakehomer on flute, soprano sax and vocals, Jim Erickson on bass, vocals, harmonica and keyboards and the guitar wizardry of Phil Cronin. An Interview With Oregon Artist Grace Bishko: View From the Top – Bend Oregon

High Desert Gallery is pleased to host an important new exhibition, titled "Grace Bishko: View From the Top - a Retrospective" from May 6 through the May 31, including a Preview Artist Reception to be held on Thursday, May 6, from 5 to 8pm, and a First Friday Gallery Walk Artist Reception on Friday May 7, from 5 to 9pm. The exhibit and sale will focus on hand-pulled prints and original paintings by the artist. During her more than 37 years of creating art, Grace Bishko has taught at Rutgers, Moore College of Art and University of the Arts, both in Philadelphia, and taught privately in Oaxaca, Mexico. The exceptional quality of Grace Bishko's artistic vision continues to capture the imagination.

We recently visited with Grace and talked about this show in terms of "a retrospective." We want to share some of what she had to say about "the beginning":

“I was born in 1936, and grew up as the youngest child in a "Bohemian" family of 5 children. Our parents were from Russia, and very "Americanized" over the years. They were talented in music - they wrote it, played it, and sang it! Their love of the arts trickled down into all of our lives.

My older sister was the Director of the 1030 Art Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio. One day, she brought home casein paints, brushes and a canvas, and I started to paint. In 1946 I was 10 years old. I started painting, and never stopped. I had two sisters involved in the visual arts - one became an art teacher - and they were my mentors well into my adult life. They planted their seeds deeply.

From 1947 to 1973, my painting education was based on what I saw in the museums and art books - the Old Masters were very important teachers. I studied their brush strokes, use of color and composition, as well as anatomy, endlessly. It was all there in their history. The only painting of my own that I have left from that period is a still life of yellow mums in a Japanese vase, which I completed in 1973. (Editor's Note: This piece will be included in the exhibition.)

Then what happened?

In 1973, the beginnings of a new "Women's Movement" in the arts prompted me to search for my own voice as an artist, and I enrolled part time in college courses. By the end of the first year my style was boldly changing into a unique style, and I was ready to enroll at The Cleveland Institute of Art full time. My portfolio was accepted, and I was given advanced standing in my art classes. By then, I had learned to listen to my inner self and appreciate the new art around me. And my images evolved into strong, female oriented concepts. I not only painted them, but also created lithographs, engravings and etchings of this imagery. At first, the students and my professors were very much against my presence in the school, and my art - and they voiced it. However, it didn't take long for them to come to appreciate my individuality, and imagery. The students picked up on my imagery, and used it well. Some of the teachers would not return my assignments to me - they kept them for themselves!

In 1980, at age 44, I received my MFA degree (Master of Fine Arts) from Rutgers. By then I had been teaching life drawing classes at Rutgers, and lithography at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. I went on to teach Design at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 1996 and 1997, I taught life drawing to 15 private students, most of whom were already showing their art in Oaxaca, Mexico. This was the last time I taught classes. I know I did a good job teaching, but it took so much out of me and my own art. I just had to stop, and focus on my soul.

From then on, I worked at non art jobs to support myself and my 3 children, and I painted at night. The male imagery crept back into my work, and it was so exciting to find new stories to paint. Every year I've had a one woman show.

My son, and his sister are musicians, and they each have many students to teach. My other daughter teaches computer animation at Emily Carr Institute of Art. They all have graduate degrees. Education is so good for life.

As both a painter and a printmaker, we asked Grace to talk more about these two mediums:

Printmaking is a process that awakens me to NEW! I've been painting for so long, that it doesn't even seem like a process to me anymore. It's more like breathing. Printmaking is always a surprise - sometimes wonderful, and sometimes awful, which shakes me up and takes my breath away! My paintings have story content - sometimes brief, and sometimes very in depth. I think this clouds the process in a way. Whereas, in printing, the process makes the story.

Working at Atellier 6000 has been very exciting. I'm surrounded by wonderful artists. The inks and materials are not toxic like the "traditional" were. The founder, Pat Clark, who is an incredibly exceptional artist, is always there to offer her help. She runs the shop in a most professional manner.

We had one last question for Grace: “Which painting or print in View From the Top is your favorite?

My favorite piece in this retrospective show is "The Sabbath Bride". To me, she is not a bride to a husband. She is a bride to life. She is walking into all space, which looks empty at first, but there is so much to do, see, and feel, waiting for her in that lovely ether.

About Grace Bishko: Grace lives in Central Oregon, hikes the trails, and paints her memories of what she has seen. A serious and honest painter, she paints from her heart and of her memories and experiences. Her imagery contains an ever so slight surreal edge to grab and retain the viewer's attention, while at the same time satisfying their deep emotions and enjoyment. High Desert Gallery is truly honored to represent Grace Bishko. In the 1970's she decided to stop painting directly from "life," and to develop a vocabulary that would allow her to paint through her personal feelings. Through education, and experimentation, her creative endeavors evolved in many stages. The results of this adventure are embedded in the artwork she is involved in today. Now, Grace is honored that her paintings are appreciated and understood across a wide multicultural expanse. Winning all possible awards at the Cleveland Institute of Art, she went on to receive her Master of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers, The State University, Mason Gross School of the Arts. After receiving her M.F.A. degree, Grace taught life drawing at Rutgers, design at University of the Arts, and lithography at Moore College of Art. Since then, she has focused on her own art, exhibiting yearly in solo and group exhibitions. “A View From the Top” will highlight both new work and a Retrospective show, featuring paintings pulled from the artist's personal collection of favorites. The theme - “A View From the Top” - relates to Grace's long career as a painter and artist, as well as a light-hearted reference to her studio, which is located on the third floor. Included will be new fine art hand-pulled prints from her Atelier 6000 studio time, in preparation for the 6XA6 Fine Art Print Show in September, as well as a figurative series titled Blues I, II, and III, (Original Painting as shown) painted in acrylics on handmade paper.

"In my mind, these three figures have a stillness about them. Two of them are not moving. They are in a quiet zone of thought perhaps? The horizontal piece is touched with some form of power. All together, they present themselves in privacy with their backs to the viewer. The bold painting, of the nude figures and the cactus plants, was inspired by the beautiful heavy, dark handmade paper, which you can see in between the black stripes of the borders. Also, I should mention the incredible brightness that's possible when painting with acrylics.” Grace Bishko, Bend, Oregon 2010.

The First Round in the 6XA6 Fine Art Print Show

Six High Desert Gallery Artists have been selected for the first round in the 6XA6 Fine Art Print Show at High Desert Gallery in Bend Oregon, scheduled for September 2 through September 26, 2010. Each artist will work at Atelier 6000 to produce a selection of original hand pulled fine art block prints, etchings, and monoprints. The completed work will then be juried by High Desert Gallery, and six artists will be selected and featured during the 6XA6 Artist Receptions September 2 and 3, and the 6XA6 Show. Over the coming months we will follow these seven artists through the printing process, so check back frequently to cheer on your favorite and read about his or her experiences at Atelier 6000.

Here are the selected artists, in no particular order:

Grace Bishko, who hikes the trails of Central Oregon and paints memories of what she has seen, often with an ever so slight surreal edge.

Glen Corbett, an award winning painter, weaver and printmaker well-known for her depictions of Black Butte and the Central Oregon landscape.

2010 Art Gallery Events – High Desert Gallery, Bend Oregon

High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon is pleased to release their 2010 Art Gallery Events. The fine art gallery is located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue, on the retail floor of the Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend Oregon. Each month during the Bend Oregon First Friday Art Gallery Walk the gallery will host an artist reception with live music, new work by select regionally and nationally known Central Oregon Artists, refreshments and a darn good time!

Starting in April, special Artist Preview Receptions will be held on the Thursday prior to First Friday and provide a wonderful opportunity for gallery clients, guests and the public to chat with the artist and view and purchase the newest work available from the artists.
