An Evening of Fine Art and Music - First Friday Art Gallery Walk November 6th

Join us for an evening of fine art, music, wine, and some holiday spirit as High Desert Gallery at the Oxford Hotel hosts an artist reception featuring Sue Favinger Smith's exhibition of oil paintings, with a live performance by Erin Cole-Baker. The event will take place on Friday, November 6th, from 5pm to 9, at our new gallery space, located at 10 NW Minnesota at Lava, in conjunction with the Bend Gallery Association First Friday Art Gallery Walk.  

On view will be selections from Sue Smith's oil-on-panel Mesa Series as well as her more traditional explorations of the landscape. Erin Cole-Baker's live performance will be one of only two shows she will be doing here till the end of the year.

Smith has been consistently challenging traditional stereotypes and often embraces multiple approaches to her subject, ranging from non-representation abstraction to Impressionism. Color, texture, and an intimate connection with materials identify Smith's work.

Cole-Baker will be touring in France during November, then returning for the new CD release (Talon and Spur) in the United States during December. She'll head for New Zealand for the summer and to release the CD over there.

The evening promises to be filled with good art, good music, good cheer and the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.

About Sue Favinger Smith: Sue Smith began her award-winning career at the age of 50, earning an art degree from Oregon State University in 2005. Since then she has focused on oil painting, exploring the techniques and color used by painters who inspire her. Sue has participated in national and regional exhibitions, solo and three-person shows, and is a member of Women Artists of the West, Oil Painters of America, and the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, the oldest professional arts organization for women in the country. Erin Cole-Baker Performing Live at High Desert Gallery – Bend Oregon, First Friday, November 6th

Erin Cole-Baker will be performing live on Friday, November 6th, at High Desert Gallery at the Oxford Hotel, 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at Lava, as part of the Bend Gallery Association's First Friday Art Gallery Walk.

“I will be playing music for the rest of my life” is the tag line on Erin Cole-Baker's website, and one we applaud. This singer-songwriter grew up in New Zealand, in a home filled with acoustic music, jazz, blues, even classical piano.  As she grew older, she began to realize how the music was influencing her life. Erin now says that music is “her love and her passion, and she hopes to share it with you.”

After moving to the States in 2005, Erin joined with Erin Zurflu, to form a singing duo familiar to Sisters Folk Festival enthusiasts and fans everywhere as The Erins. Compelling songwriting and thoughtful lyrics have pleased audiences across the country.

High Desert Gallery is honored to host Erin Cole-Baker during the opening artist reception for Oregon artist Sue Favinger Smith, whose show, titled “Perception and Imagination: Exploring the Landscape”, features an interesting mix of contemporary oil paintings that seek to dig beneath the surface and discover what might be hidden. High Desert Gallery - Redmond - Hosts American Association of University Women fundraiser "Women Artists' Exhibit and Sale"

High Desert Gallery – Redmond – will host the  American Association of University Women fund raising event “Women Artists' Exhibit and Sale” on Saturday, October 17, 2009. from 11:00am to 1:00pm. This event is a scholarship fundraiser by the Redmond Branch of the AAUW and features original work by local artists. Participating artists include Terri Black, Leslie Colvin, Michele and Mitch Deadrick, Jennifer Moore, Susi Nissen, Vicki Roadman, Laurie Svec, Tracy Thille, and Linda Ziegenhagen. Artwork includes pottery, painting, photography, and homemade soaps. The artists will donate a portion of sales to the Redmond AAUW Scholarship Fund for High School Senior Girls.

High Desert Gallery Redmond, Oregon Introduces Sue Favinger Smith

 High Desert Gallery Redmond is pleased to announce the addition of Oregon artist Sue Favinger Smith to the Redmond Gallery roster of fine artists. Working in oil, Sue Smith's work ranges between abstract and realism, but the landscape is the inspirational foundation. Of her semi-abstract Mesa Series, the artist explains, “Sometimes I feel like an archaeologist when I'm painting, scratching the surface of my panels, adding material and then taking it away.” But other times she follows the traditions of the Russian and Spanish Impressionists where good draftsmanship, combined with expressive color and brushwork combine with inspiration to communicate more than just a visual experience. She believes that a good painting can invite exploration into the unknown, taking the cues from the artist's imagination and augmenting them with your own. Sue Smith has exhibited nationally and High Desert Gallery is honored to represent her.

High Desert Gallery Redmond is pleased to announce the addition of Oregon artist Kay Baker

to the Redmond Gallery roster of fine artists. Working in oil and pastel, Kay Baker specializes in plein air paintings, capturing the essence of our Central Oregon landscape with a poet's eye. Her work includes grand vistas as well as the intimacy of a quiet nook or the passing slant of sunlight on the riverbank.  It's easy to understand why she has participated in so many juried exhibitions within the past few years. "I want to express the emotions that I am feeling in my work and create something that evokes similar emotions for those that see my paintings."

Well-known throughout Central Oregon, Kay Baker has many collectors and admirers of her work and High Desert Gallery is honored to represent her.

About Kay Baker: A childhood fascination with horses launched Kay Baker's art career. Growing up in Sioux City, Iowa, she spent many hours drawing them. Later she was challenged by noted artist, William Herring, to look into the "horses of her soul." This advice is at the heart of Kay's paintings. As both a plein air painter and a studio artist, Kay seeks that close connection with her subject whether it is a floral study or a tranquil rural scene that allows the viewer to feel and celebrate the uniqueness of God's creation. Kay has a Bachelor of Advertising Art from the University of South Dakota and has studied with many well known artists. She has participated in solo and juried group exhibitions, and is a juried member in Women Artists of the West, the Pastel Society of America, Oil Painters of America, and the Oregon Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Northwest Pastel Society, and Plein Air Painters of Oregon.

High Desert Gallery Redmond is pleased to announce the addition of Oregon artist Rosalyn Kliot to the Redmond Gallery roster of fine artists. Working in mixed media collage and fiber art, Rosalyn Kliot's inspiration evolves from her curiosity and intuition, often employing handmade silk papers, found objects, words that serve as design elements without meaning, and materials from recent and past travels. Rosalyn's work is immediately recognized by her use of color, and her sometimes whimsical, sometimes thought-provoking surfaces. Layers of transparent college elements, embellished with paint, make each piece a fascinating journey into the imagination. “I want the work to have some mystery and depth, with subject matter secondary to process.” Rosalyn Kliot has exhibited widely throughout the Pacific Northwest and High Desert Gallery is honored to represent her.

About Rosalyn Kliot: Rosalyn Kliot was born in Eastern Europe and raised in America, a background that allows her to have "a respect for both the traditional as well as the more contemporary and experimental approach to subject matter and theme." Rosalyn's mixed

media collage and fiber art is all about color and texture. Her collage paintings combine

various and sometimes disparate materials and objects. This allows free range to explore form, texture, and color in sometimes surprising ways. Removing an object from one context and placing it within another context creates new meaning, and a different sense of the known, and unknown. Although her approach may seem spontaneous, Rosalyn relies on her art training, keeping in mind formal elements, such as composition, line, color, and texture. Rosalyn Kliot received a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Roosevelt University in Chicago, while on a four year scholarship, with subsequent graduate work at Southern Oregon University. Her work has been exhibited and sold in Chicago, Los Angeles, Oregon, Washington, and Tokyo, Japan.

Join us for 'Celebration Oregon,' an Oregon 150 event with the Plein Air Painters of Oregon

High Desert Gallery in Bend Oregon is honored to host the 2009 Annual Exhibition of the Plein Air Painters of Oregon. The Annual Show, titled “Celebration Oregon!”, is sponsored by the Plein Air Painters of Oregon and features 40 paintings selected by juror, Cindy Briggs. The exhibit will be showcased in High Desert Gallery's new location at the Oxford Hotel, located at 10 NW Minnesota at Lava, in downtown Bend.

The opening reception will be held during the First Friday Gallery Walk, October 2, 2009, from 5-9PM. The evening promises to be lively as we exhibit some of the finest plein air painting in the state, along with live music by the Anvil Blasters, plenty of refreshments, and artful conversation.  The exhibition of plein air paintings, executed on location through Oregon, will run from Oct 1 through the 31, 2009.

High Desert Gallery Announces a Niche of New Artists in the Redmond Gallery

High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is pleased to announce a new slate of unique artists for the Redmond Oregon Art Gallery. 

 "We've worked hard to establish a great mix of artistic approaches that compliment our Central Oregon lifestyle," said Myrna Dow, High Desert Gallery owner.  "It's important to showcase artistic viewpoints that take the ordinary a bit farther, while remaining representational.  The new artists in our Redmond Gallery do this while maintaining continuity with our Sisters and Bend Gallery artists."

We invite you to visit our Redmond Gallery to view over 60 new original paintings, monoprints, collage and fiber art representing our exciting new Gallery Roster of Artists, including Kay Baker, Sue Gomen Honnell, Rosalyn Kliot, Patty Freeman-Martin, Vivian Olsen, and Sue Favinger Smith.  Work includes plein air painting and wildlife art, landscape in both watercolor and oil, as well as contemporary landscape  and still life, mixed media fiber, western art, and collage.  Future plans include the addition of more Redmond Oregon area artists including work of 3-dimensional artists and guest artists from the Sisters and Bend Galleries. 

Current Featured Artist: Sue Favinger Smith, "Perception and Imagination," featuring a new selection of oil paintings inspired by the landscape.  With "Perception and Imagination", I am prying open that window between what I perceive visually and what I can imagine.  The landscape has always been the inspirational foundation, but my work is not about topography - as beautiful as it is.  It's about being "alone" and not "lonely", about venturing into the unknown and what I might find there.
